"etymology_text": "Borrowed from Mexican Spanish taco (“taco”). The origin of the Spanish food name is uncertain. It may be a transferred use of taco (“plug, wad”), perhaps because rolled tacos were compared with the paper-wrapped explosive charges known as tacos in Mexican mines. If the food name belongs to this word family, it may ultimately be related through Italian tacco (“heel; chock”) to Proto-West Germanic *takkō (“twig, branch, shoot”), and thus distantly related to English English tack, Dutch Dutch tak (“branch”) and German German Zacke (“prong, spike”).\nAnother proposed source is Nahuatl tlahco (“half; middle, centre”), perhaps referring to filling placed in the middle of a tortilla; this derivation is likewise uncertain. The Norwegian borrowing is first attested in 1936.\nCompare the parallel borrowings Norwegian Nynorsk taco, Danish taco, Swedish taco, Dutch taco, Finnish taco, German Taco, French taco, Polish taco, Russian та́ко (táko) and Japanese タコス (“taco”).",

"etymology_text": "Borrowed from Mexican Spanish taco (“taco”). The origin of the Spanish food name is uncertain. It may be a transferred use of taco (“plug, wad”), perhaps because rolled tacos were compared with the paper-wrapped explosive charges known as tacos in Mexican mines. If the food name belongs to this word family, it may ultimately be related through Italian tacco (“heel; chock”) to Proto-West Germanic *takkō (“twig, branch, shoot”), and thus distantly related to English English tack, Dutch Dutch tak (“branch”) and German German Zacke (“prong, spike”).\nAnother proposed source is Nahuatl tlahco (“half; middle, centre”), perhaps referring to filling placed in the middle of a tortilla; this derivation is likewise uncertain. The Norwegian borrowing is first attested in 1936.\nCompare the parallel borrowings Norwegian Nynorsk taco, Danish taco, Swedish taco, Dutch taco, Finnish taco, German Taco, French taco, Polish taco, Russian та́ко (táko) and Japanese タコス (“taco”).",
